French Overseas Netflix Markets Align on Identical Top Picks; Algorithm or Authentic Taste
Four French Caribbean and Pacific territories simultaneously favored identical films during early August 2026.
Netflix subscribers across four French overseas territories converged on nearly identical viewing preferences during the week of August 3-9, 2026, a pattern that raises a pointed question: are algorithms shaping taste, or is taste already shared?
The science-fiction thriller The Last House, directed by Louis Leterrier and starring Greta Lee and Wagner Moura, seized the top film position in Reunion, Martinique, and New Caledonia the moment it arrived. Its immediate dominance across territories separated by thousands of kilometers signals sustained demand for high-budget genre content, independent of local production ecosystems. En eaux tres troubles, the franchise sequel, secured strong placements in Reunion and New Caledonia. Turbulence appeared consistently across all four regional rankings. The French comedy Paulette, featuring Bernadette Lafont, landed top-five in both Martinique and New Caledonia. Additional titles including 72 heures, D-War: La Guerre des dragons, and Elize: Surgie de l'ombre distributed across multiple territory rankings, establishing a shared film consumption pattern that held firm across the Pacific and the Caribbean alike.
Television rankings revealed sharper territorial clustering. Wrath held first place in Reunion, Guadeloupe, and Martinique for a second consecutive week. Ma vie avec les Walter Boys, the third season, entered second position across those same three territories immediately upon release. My Daughter's Father consistently occupied third place in each.
Guadeloupe and Martinique demonstrated the most pronounced synchronization. Their top six programs ranked identically and in precisely the same order, extending to eight shared series titles: Wrath, Ma vie avec les Walter Boys, My Daughter's Father, The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare, The Bombing of Pan Am 103, Elite Force, Agent Kim Reactivated, and Chicago P.D. This near-perfect alignment across adjacent Caribbean territories suggests either homogeneous subscription behavior or algorithmic recommendation convergence at the platform level.
New Caledonia diverged substantially. While The Last House matched film dominance observed elsewhere, series rankings fractured. The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare claimed the top series position, with The Bombing of Pan Am 103 in second. Ma vie avec les Walter Boys settled into third, and Wrath dropped to fourth, a marked departure from its commanding performance across the other three territories. That Pacific-Caribbean split, despite shared platform infrastructure and release calendars, indicates that subscriber bases in each region respond differently to true-crime and documentary-adjacent content.
The data derives from official Netflix Tudum rankings, which reflect popularity metrics rather than absolute viewership counts. The platform does not disclose precise view totals. Rankings indicate which programs captured subscriber attention without quantifying engagement depth or completion rates. That methodological constraint limits granular analysis, though week-to-week ranking consistency provides reliable directional indicators of production resonance within each territory.
By contrast, the underlying driver of this convergence remains unresolved. Netflix's recommendation algorithms, which weight viewing history, completion rates, and demographic similarity across subscriber bases, could account for the Guadeloupe-Martinique synchronization and the broader film alignment. Organic cultural affinity within French overseas communities, reinforced by shared language, media consumption habits, and social networks, may drive independent preference alignment just as effectively. As Netflix continues publishing territory-level data, longitudinal analysis will eventually clarify which force predominates, and whether the Guadeloupe-Martinique mirror image holds through the remainder of 2026 or begins to crack.
